Design System: Text Area Character Countdown
Project Goal📍
1. Enabled students to see an indication of a character limit and remind students how many characters were left while they were typing to avoid triggering the error.
2. Improve the design system and ensure the consistency of the company design style.
Summary 📄
The benefit of having this text area character countdown was to improve the design system. We planned to think ahead and create this design in the system for the future usage. Therefore, in the future, students are able to know the character limit below the text box to avoid triggering the error while typing a question.
While designing, we also wanted to ensure the consistency of the design system and made sure the design style remains coherent throughout all Chegg products.

Proposed Design Changes
I proposed multiple design changes and shared with the design system committee and visual specialist to receive feedbacks. Based on the critiques and feedbacks, I iterated on the design and landed on the first one.
Usage of the Design
The potential use cases of the text area countdown can be used in where students have to enter the limited amount of information such as typing a question. This text area character countdown can guide students how many characters are left so they won’t trigger the error.
 Character Countdown Flow
1. The default character countdown number starts from 1000 characters
2. While typing, the number of the character countdown at the bottom left corner starts counting down
3. While reaching the character limit, the countdown will show “0” character
4. When users are about to surpass the character limit, the system will notify them that they have reached the limit and need to stop typing. (text field and the texts underneath turned red)
Chegg Study Pack End-to-End Flow Mapping
Project Goal📍
1. Identified the main Chegg StudyPack (CSP) entry points by mapping out the end-to-end flow of current experience from both first-time users and returning users standpoints.
2. Utilize the finished end-to-end flow mapping as a foundational template for future CSP data add-ons.
Summary 📄
The benefit of having this end-to-end mapping was to improve the flaws within the current flows. The high level overview of the products prompted the team to go back for rectifications and modifications to ensure students have a pleasant experience while accessing the CSP products. It also helped designers and stakeholders to identify improvements.
Also, since the end to end flow has not really been captured before, this map can serve as a template or a way to educate the stakeholders who want to look at the current user experience.

Identified Main Chegg Study Pack Entry Points
I captured all possible end-to-end flows with screenshots through current user experience. Afterwards, I mapped out the flow to better understand where student can access the CSP products through different entry points. The main entry points included are as following:
Final Deliverable - High Level Overview End-to-End Flow
Based on the screenshots I captured, the final deliverable I put together with as a large end-to-end flowchart, which served as a high level overview of the Chegg products.
My Takeaways from the Chegg UX Design Internship💡✨
This is the first user experience design intern I have had in my life. I was going through a transition phase from being a Graphic Designer to an UX Designer since 2019. From this internship, I learned that UX does not always have to be about big conceptualizations or big innovations. UX can be something really small but is still able to create a huge impact on the whole experience of the products. In school, students are always encouraged to be creative, be innovational most of the time. However, it’s not necessarily like that in the real industry. UX can be simply modifying and adding small changes but creates significant impact on the users.
During this internship, I also figured company culture was really important to me. I truly enjoyed the culture at Chegg, which showed to be very welcoming, encouraging, versatile, and mission driven. This was what I really admire and appreciate at Chegg.
Finally, I learned more about my career path direction. I found this internship really help me have a better understanding of what UX actually is in the real world, and it prompted me to think about what type of career direction I would like to go for in the future. The right culture fit, right opportunity fit, and right value fit are what I consider essential for my future career searching.
